The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State has officially unveiled its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election, completing its governorship ticket and positioning itself as the first party in the state to publicly present a full slate for next year's poll. The party, at a ceremony held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Yola, presented Alhaji Abubakar Mahmud Wambai, the Madakin Mubi, as running mate to its governorship candidate, Chief Maurice Michael Vunobolki.
Wambai is a former member of the House of Representatives and a seasoned administrator and educationist. He hails from the northern part of Adamawa State and holds the traditional title of Madakin Mubi. His selection is seen as a strategic move to balance the PDP's ticket, as Vunobolki hails from Numan in the southern part of the state. Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Adamawa State, Engr. Belmond Dogo, described Wambai as an experienced administrator, former lawmaker and respected traditional title holder whose wealth of experience would strengthen the party's governorship ticket.
In a significant political development that has generated considerable interest, the party also appointed Yerima Hammantukur Ribadu, the Dan Madamin Fufore, as Director-General of its campaign organisation. The appointment has attracted attention because of his family ties to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, a leading figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Yerima Ribadu is widely regarded as a grassroots political mobiliser in Adamawa State and is expected to spearhead the PDP's campaign as the opposition party seeks to strengthen its support base ahead of the governorship poll. His emergence has fuelled political discussions over the involvement of a member of the Ribadu family in a key role within the PDP's campaign structure.
Speaking at the event, Vunobolki expressed confidence in the strength of the PDP team and challenged other governorship candidates and their running mates to a public debate ahead of the 2027 election. He described the public debate as the beginning of a renewed political movement aimed at reclaiming power in Adamawa State. "I challenge every governorship candidate and their running mate to a public debate where we can present our vision, achievements, competence and plans for the people of the State so that the electorate should decide who is best prepared to govern," Vunobolki said. He noted that democracy thrives on accountability and issue-based campaigns rather than personal attacks and that the proposed debate would provide Adamawa residents with an opportunity to assess the capacity, experience and policy direction of each candidate.
Vunobolki described Wambai as a distinguished statesman, respected traditional title holder, seasoned administrator, accomplished educationist and former federal lawmaker whose wealth of experience would complement his administration. On his Campaign Director-General, he admired his vast experience in governance and political strategy and expressed confidence that the campaign structure would mobilise support across the state's 21 local government areas. Vunobolki maintained that the PDP's leadership team combines experience, pedigree, educational qualifications, grassroots mobilisation and national exposure.
With the unveiling of Wambai as deputy governorship candidate and the appointment of Yerima Ribadu as Campaign Director-General, the PDP has become the first party in Adamawa State to officially present a deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election. The unveiling ceremony, which drew party leaders, stakeholders, traditional rulers and supporters from across the 21 local government areas, signals the PDP's efforts to consolidate its political machinery ahead of the election.
The PDP's governorship candidate, Chief Maurice Vunobolki, had earlier been celebrated after his name was uploaded to the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the recognised PDP governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Adamawa State. His emergence as the party's flagbearer followed a protracted leadership battle within the PDP in Adamawa, where the influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and NSA Nuhu Ribadu had been a subject of intense political contestation. Vunobolki has previously dismissed the influence of Atiku and Ribadu in the selection of Fintiri's successor, insisting that Adamawa voters make up their own minds at the ballot box.
