The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspected bandits' arms supplier, identified as Joro Jarkata, following a proactive operation by operatives of the Guma Division. The arrest, which took place on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed in the suspect's possession, according to a statement issued by the command's spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondona, and made available to journalists in Makurdi on Friday, July 31, 2026.
According to the police, the arrest followed a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by a team of officers in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. During the operation, the team intercepted two persons riding on a motorcycle. Upon sighting the police, one of the occupants alighted from the motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush, abandoning the vehicle and his accomplice. The remaining suspect, identified as Joro Jarkata, a 20-year-old male from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was apprehended. A subsequent search conducted on him led to the recovery of the 115 rounds of live ammunition concealed in his possession.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for discreet investigation. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice and unravel the source, intended destination, and circumstances surrounding the conveyance of the ammunition. The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the vigilance, professionalism, and alertness of the operatives whose prompt action led to the recovery. He reiterated the command's unwavering commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition and dismantling criminal networks threatening the peace and security of Benue State.
