The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced the release of Comrade James Iyanuoluwa Adio, the immediate past Students' Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), who was remanded in prison custody earlier this week. The confirmation was made by NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Friday, July 31, 2026.
"I am pleased to announce that Comrade Adio, the immediate past FUOYE SUG President, who was remanded in prison, has regained his freedom," Afeez wrote. "I just spoke with him personally, and I am delighted to confirm that he is in high spirits." The release follows a period of intense advocacy and intervention by the student body, which had threatened mass protests to demand Adio's freedom.
Adio was remanded in prison by a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, July 27, 2026, over a case he had personally instituted before the court. The controversy stemmed from a case Adio initiated after private, consensual moments between him and another adult were allegedly recorded and circulated on social media without his consent. NANS maintained that Adio was the complainant in the matter and was not initially facing any criminal charges. However, the case was allegedly turned against him through the actions of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the presiding magistrate.
The remand sparked outrage within the student community, with NANS describing the court's decision as "judicial rascality" and a gross violation of Adio's fundamental rights. The student body had mobilised for a protest at Fajuyi Park, Ado-Ekiti, but the demonstration was called off after the Ekiti State Attorney General intervened and promised to secure Adio's release. The Attorney General had convened a meeting with all parties and assured students that he would do everything within his power to ensure Adio's freedom.
In his statement, Afeez commended the NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Chairman for Ekiti State for his unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership throughout the period. "He has once again demonstrated that he is a thoroughly bred comrade, always ready to stand for justice and the welfare of students," Afeez said. He also appreciated the NANS National Head of Administration for his proactiveness, dedication, and relentless efforts in ensuring the positive outcome. "This victory is a reminder that when we stand together in solidarity, justice can prevail," the NANS President declared.
The release of Comrade Adio brings to a close a tense chapter that had threatened to disrupt academic activities in Ekiti State and placed the state's judicial system under intense scrutiny. His case had drawn national attention, highlighting the vulnerability of student leaders and the importance of due process in the administration of justice. As Adio regains his freedom, the student community celebrates what they see as a victory for justice and the rule of law. The NANS President concluded his statement with the student movement's rallying cry: "Aluta Continua! Victoria Ascerta".
