The father-in-law of Tosin Omolola, a 28-year-old widow who was allegedly locked out of her late husband's home just eight days after his burial, has been formally charged to court for assault and threat to life and remanded in police custody pending the perfection of his bail. The development, confirmed on Friday, July 31, 2026, by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, marks a significant step in the legal battle over the deceased's estate and brings a measure of relief to the grieving widow and her two young sons.
Tosin Omolola, a resident of No. 8 Jumofak, Igbo Oluwo Estate, Koya Adeniran, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, lost her husband on July 20, 2026. While still mourning, she was allegedly subjected to intimidation, physical assault, and threats to her life by members of her late husband's family. According to reports, her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law moved into the house shortly after the burial and ordered her to confine herself and her two children to a single room. They allegedly attempted to take over the property and shared some of the deceased's belongings among themselves, with plans reportedly underway to sell his vehicle.
The situation escalated when a video went viral on social media showing the father-in-law padlocking the gate, preventing the bereaved mother from gaining access to the property. The footage, shared by Harrison Gwamnishu on his X handle, drew widespread condemnation and triggered immediate public outrage. Gwamnishu, who has been championing the cause of the widow, petitioned the Lagos State Police Command and called on the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) to intervene.
The Lagos State DSVA, led by Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, swiftly established contact with the survivor, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault, and intimidation. The agency confirmed that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division. Following public pressure and the agency's intervention, the police arrested the father-in-law on July 29, 2026. The other relatives vacated the property, allowing Tosin and her children to return home.
In his latest update, Gwamnishu confirmed that the father-in-law has been charged to court for assault and threat to life and has been remanded in police custody pending the perfection of his bail. The dispute over the late husband's properties was at the heart of the actions taken against Tosin, and the case is now before the court. Gwamnishu stated that he will continue to monitor developments but will be mindful not to make comments that could interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings.
The case has drawn attention to the legal rights of widows in Nigeria, particularly regarding inheritance and property ownership. Under Nigerian law, a widow is entitled to inherit her late husband's property, and any attempt to unlawfully dispossess her is a criminal offence. Gwamnishu, who has been at the forefront of the campaign for justice for Tosin, thanked members of the public for their unwavering support. He stressed that Lagos laws protect widows from harassment, intimidation, and unlawful eviction following the death of their spouses. "There is NO SENTIMENT IN LAW. Justice must prevail, and the rights of the widow and her children must be protected," he declared. As the case proceeds through the courts, Tosin Omolola and her two children can now mourn their loss in peace, while the legal system works to ensure that those who sought to exploit their grief are held accountable.
