The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man, Mohammed Aliyu Buba, for allegedly operating a fake identity document syndicate that produced forged National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for more than 1,000 unsuspecting residents. The Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, disclosed the arrest while briefing journalists on the command's operational achievements for July 2026 in Minna, the state capital. Buba, a resident of Angwan Sarki in Munya Local Government Area, was apprehended on July 28, 2026, following intelligence reports that he had been churning out fake documents across Munya and Wushishi Local Government Areas. Operatives of the Command’s Tactical Support Team raided his residence on the same day and took him into custody.
During the raid, police recovered 105 counterfeit NIN cards and 189 fake PVCs from the suspect's residence. Under interrogation, Buba confessed to producing fake identity documents for more than 1,000 people, charging ₦2,000 for each fake NIN card and ₦1,000 for each fake voter card. According to the commissioner, the suspect admitted that he had realised over ₦3 million as proceeds from the illegal business. Buba remains in police custody as investigations continue, and he will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police warned members of the public against patronising illegal identity document producers, stressing that obtaining forged government documents is a criminal offence with serious legal consequences. Elleman reaffirmed the command's commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in fraud, forgery, and identity-related crimes across the state and urged residents to report suspicious activities to the police. The bust highlights growing concerns about forged identification documents flooding Nigeria's system, as fake NINs and voter cards have become tools for electoral fraud, human trafficking, and other crimes across the country.
The arrest comes amid heightened awareness of the dangers of identity fraud, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has repeatedly warned against the use of fake PVCs to manipulate electoral processes, while the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has intensified efforts to register citizens and issue genuine NINs. The police have assured the public that they will continue to crack down on forgery syndicates and protect the integrity of the country's identity management system. As the case progresses, Buba is expected to face prosecution for his alleged role in the syndicate, and the police have urged anyone with information about similar illegal operations to come forward.
