The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a firm warning to intending travellers and visa applicants, advising them against using artificial intelligence (AI) or any digital editing tools on their passport photographs. The mission stated that such altered images will not be accepted and would significantly delay the processing of applications.
The advisory was posted on the mission's official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, August 1, 2026, and has since been widely reported by Nigerian media outlets. In the statement, the mission emphasised that passport photos must be recent, taken within the past six months, and must accurately reflect the applicant's current appearance.
“Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the mission wrote. “Your photo should be recent (taken within the past six months) and look like you (the TSA or CBP agent must be able to tell it’s you)”. The mission further warned that “submitting a digitally enhanced photo will significantly delay your application”.
The warning was accompanied by a flier reiterating the policy in bold terms, directing applicants to consult the full photo requirements on the U.S. Department of State’s website. The advisory comes amid a broader push by U.S. authorities to curb the use of AI-manipulated images in official documentation, as facial recognition systems used by border agencies increasingly rely on unaltered, high-fidelity photographs to verify travellers' identities.
The US Mission stressed that photographs must have been taken within the past six months and should closely resemble the applicant to enable easy identification by U.S. border officials, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The mission reiterated that any image that has been filtered, retouched, or otherwise digitally enhanced fails to meet U.S. passport photo requirements and could affect the processing of applications.
Applicants were also reminded to take photographs against a plain white or off-white background, face the camera directly without tilting their heads, and remove eyeglasses before taking the photograph. The US Mission has made it clear that the use of AI tools, beauty filters, or any form of digital enhancement will not be tolerated and will result in significant delays or outright rejection of visa applications.
This warning is particularly timely given the increasing availability and use of AI-powered photo editing tools, which have made it easier for individuals to alter their appearance in photographs. However, U.S. authorities have made it clear that such alterations are unacceptable for official documents, as they undermine the integrity of the identification process. Nigerian applicants are urged to adhere strictly to the guidelines to avoid unnecessary delays in their visa processing.
