A combined team of security operatives, comprising personnel of the Zamfara State Police Command, the military, and civilian security volunteers, successfully repelled a coordinated ambush by suspected armed bandits along the Gidan Giye–Magazu Road in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The fierce gun battle, which took place on Friday, July 31, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m., resulted in the neutralisation of several assailants and forced the remnants of the gang to retreat into a nearby forest with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

The operation was launched following credible intelligence that a large number of armed bandits were attempting to cross the Gidan Giye–Magazu axis, a known hotspot for criminal activities. Acting on the intelligence, operatives from the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were swiftly deployed to the area. Upon arrival, the joint security team came under heavy gunfire from the bandits, who had laid a well-coordinated ambush. The attackers opened fire on the operatives, but the security personnel responded with superior firepower, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire. The police confirmed that several bandits were neutralised during the encounter, while many others escaped into a nearby forest with gunshot injuries. Despite the intensity of the attack, the joint security team maintained the offensive, forcing the fleeing suspects to retreat and abandon their mission. One Police Counter Security Kinetic (CSK) operational vehicle sustained damage to its wheels during the gun battle, but the operatives continued their assault until the bandits fled the scene.

Commending the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, CP A.M. Bello, praised their courage and resilience in confronting the criminal elements. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against bandits and other violent criminals across the state. He assured residents that security agencies would continue to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, and that the command would not relent in its efforts to rid Zamfara of banditry and other violent crimes.

The successful operation is part of ongoing joint security offensives aimed at degrading the operational capacity of armed bandits and restoring peace in communities affected by insecurity across Zamfara State. The latest encounter demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and inter-agency collaboration in tackling the persistent security challenges in the North-West region.
