Nigeria has been officially confirmed as the host nation for the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, with Lagos selected as the venue for the continent's most prestigious football celebration. The announcement was made on Saturday, August 1, 2026, by Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. The confirmation follows President Bola Tinubu's earlier approval for Nigeria to pursue hosting rights for both the CAF Awards and the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly, marking a significant return to the forefront of African football administration and event hosting.
The 2026 CAF Awards will be held at the newly transformed Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts, formerly the National Theatre, Iganmu, which has been designated as the official venue for the ceremony. The iconic police cap-shaped cultural centre, which has become a symbol of Nigeria's cultural and creative renaissance following its transformation under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, will host Africa's biggest football gala for the first time. The venue's selection adds another landmark event to the facility's growing portfolio, underscoring its status as a premier destination for major continental gatherings. The CAF Awards ceremony will honour outstanding footballers, coaches, clubs, national teams and administrators across the continent, celebrating exceptional performances recorded over the previous year across club and international competitions.
This edition marks Nigeria's first time hosting the CAF Awards in almost a decade, with the country's previous hosting coming with the 2016 awards ceremony staged in Abuja in January 2017. Nigeria has played a notable role in the history of the CAF Awards, having hosted the ceremony on four occasions, including the most recent in January 2015 in Lagos at the Eko Hotels and Convention Centre. The 2017 Abuja ceremony saw Riyad Mahrez of Morocco named Men's Player of the Year, while former Super Falcons captain Asisat Oshoala emerged as Women's Player of the Year. The country's return as host reaffirms its growing stature as a destination for major continental sporting events and underscores its enduring role in the growth and promotion of African football.
The 2026 CAF Awards will honour the continent's top football talents across several categories, including Men's Player of the Year, Women's Player of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year. Other categories expected to be recognised include Young Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, National Team of the Year and Club of the Year. The ceremony is expected to attract some of the continent's biggest football stars and stakeholders, gathering federation officials, coaches, legendary players and key personalities from the sports world for one of African football's most significant international showcases. The announcement comes during a busy period for Nigerian football administration, as the country is also preparing to stage the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in October 2026, which will bring together presidents of all 54 member associations, representatives of the six zonal unions and senior administrators from across the continent.
The confirmation of Lagos as the host city was preceded by a CAF inspection team's visit to assess Nigeria's readiness to host the two major events. The delegation, which arrived in Nigeria in late July, inspected facilities in Abuja and Lagos, including the proposed venue at the Wole Soyinka Centre, as well as the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and EKO Hotel & Suites, which are expected to accommodate the influx of dignitaries, officials and guests attending the events. The inspection team's visit and subsequent confirmation of Lagos as the host city demonstrate CAF's confidence in Nigeria's infrastructure and its proven ability to host major international events. Hosting both the CAF Awards and the General Assembly further solidifies Nigeria's place among the heavyweights of African football and demonstrates the continental body's trust in the country for its institutional events.
The 2026 ceremony also presents a potentially historic moment for Nigerian football, as the event could create a memorable occasion if Super Eagles stars Victor Osimhen or Ademola Lookman win the Men's Player of the Year award before home supporters. Both attackers are widely expected to challenge for places on CAF's final shortlist after another impressive campaign. Lookman, who helped Atalanta with key goals and performances, and Osimhen, who continued to lead the line with his goalscoring form, are among Africa's most prolific forwards. Only six past and present Super Eagles players have won the prestigious African Player of the Year award, making the 2026 ceremony another opportunity for Nigeria to add to its rich football history. CAF is expected to announce the official date of the ceremony and unveil the complete list of nominees and final categories in the coming months as anticipation builds for one of the continent's biggest nights in football.
