A fire scare at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos briefly disrupted operations on Sunday, August 2, 2026, before the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) clarified that there was no actual fire at the facility. The incident, which occurred around 7:00 a.m., prompted an emergency response from FAAN's Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS), with the authority initially confirming a fire outbreak at the terminal.
In an early advisory posted on its official X handle, FAAN stated that a fire incident had occurred at Terminal 2 and that its ARFFS team had been deployed to contain the situation. The authority assured the public that no casualties or loss of life had been recorded. Videos circulating online showed passengers standing outside the terminal while firefighters responded to the incident.
However, less than two hours after the initial alert, FAAN issued a clarifying statement through its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire. The authority said preliminary findings indicated that there was no fire at the terminal. "The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal's FM-200 fire suppression system," the statement read. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated.
FAAN confirmed that normal operations had since resumed at the terminal, with passengers being processed and flight activities continuing as scheduled. "Normal operations have resumed at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, following the earlier incident," the authority stated. Detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The fire scare comes barely six months after another fire outbreak at the old international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, which led to the eventual demolition of that facility. The Murtala Muhammed International Airport remains Nigeria's busiest aviation hub, handling thousands of domestic and international passengers daily.
FAAN appreciated passengers, airlines, airport users, and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, while reiterating its commitment to the safety and security of all airport operations. The authority has urged the public to rely on official updates as investigations continue into the activation of the terminal's fire suppression system.
