The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) has moved swiftly to reassure customers, stakeholders, and the general public that its operations remain fully functional following a fire incident that damaged part of its headquarters in Abuja on Saturday night, August 1, 2026. In a statement issued on Monday, August 3, the bank confirmed that the blaze, which broke out on the second floor of its head office in the Central Business District, was successfully contained by emergency responders and did not spread to other sections of the building. The bank emphasised that all core banking services, mortgage operations, and customer engagements have continued without disruption.

The fire, which occurred a few minutes past 8:00 p.m., prompted a swift response from combined teams of the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service, who brought the flames under control and prevented extensive damage to the complex. In an update signed by the Group Head of Corporate Communications, Joe Abuku, the bank stated that while some office furniture, equipment, and appliances in the affected areas were damaged, no injuries were recorded. Crucially, the bank noted that official documents affected by the fire are securely backed up electronically through cloud storage, a measure that has ensured the integrity and security of critical records.

"We are grateful to report that official documents that were affected are securely backed up electronically, with cloud storage, thanks to the Bank's digital transformation measures," Abuku said in the statement. He added that investigations and evaluations to establish the cause of the fire are still ongoing. The bank also confirmed that appropriate business continuity and mitigation measures are in place to ensure minimal disruption to service delivery. "The office remains open for normal business, and customers can continue to access the bank's services as usual," Abuku assured.

FMBN expressed profound appreciation to the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, members of staff, and other stakeholders whose coordinated response helped bring the situation under control and prevent further damage. The bank urged the public to disregard speculation suggesting the fire had affected its operations, insisting that all services remain fully operational. Contributors to the National Housing Fund (NHF), mortgage beneficiaries, and other stakeholders have been assured that customer records and essential operational systems remain secure and fully functional.

The fire incident comes at a time when the FMBN continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria's housing finance sector, administering the National Housing Fund and providing mortgage financing to Nigerians. The bank's ability to maintain uninterrupted operations despite the fire underscores the resilience of its digital infrastructure and the effectiveness of its business continuity planning. As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, FMBN has pledged to keep the public informed of further developments. For now, the bank has made it clear: business continues as usual.
