Troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison have successfully uncovered and destroyed two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted along the Gwoza-Wala Road in Borno State, preventing what could have been a devastating attack on security personnel and civilian road users. The explosives were discovered at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, during routine operations between the Golf Bravo and Papa 2 locations along the road, according to security sources who spoke to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
Upon detecting the devices, the troops immediately secured the area and deployed an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to the scene. The EOD specialists successfully recovered the explosives and carried out a controlled in-situ detonation of the two IEDs, eliminating the threat without any casualties or damage to personnel or equipment. The operation was conducted as part of ongoing clearance and route-sanitisation efforts across the North-East, aimed at denying terrorists the ability to emplace explosive devices on major supply routes. Military sources confirmed that the successful operation "prevented a potential attack on security personnel and civilian road users," adding that "clearance and route-sanitisation operations remain ongoing across the North-East to deny terrorists the ability to emplace explosive devices on major supply routes."
The Gwoza-Wala Road is a critical artery in Borno State, connecting the Gwoza Local Government Area to other parts of the state. The road has been a recurring target for terrorist groups, who have frequently planted IEDs along the route to target military convoys and civilian vehicles. The successful detection and destruction of the two IEDs by troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and the importance of sustained military pressure in degrading the capabilities of terrorist groups in the North-East.
The operation comes amid heightened security concerns in Borno State, where terrorist groups have continued to plant IEDs along major supply routes, posing a significant threat to both military personnel and civilians. In recent weeks, troops have intensified clearance and route-sanitisation operations across the North-East to deny terrorists the ability to emplace explosive devices on major supply routes. The successful operation on the Gwoza-Wala Road is a testament to the professionalism and vigilance of the troops, who remain committed to protecting the lives and property of citizens and ensuring the security of the region.
The military has reiterated its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups and ensuring the safety of major supply routes across the North-East. The successful detection and destruction of the two IEDs along the Gwoza-Wala Road is a significant victory in the ongoing fight against terrorism and a clear indication that the military remains determined to deny terrorists the freedom to operate with impunity. As clearance and route-sanitisation operations continue, the military has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
