The Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has officially resigned his membership from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), bringing an end to his association with the opposition party. Hanga announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, confirming that his decision took immediate effect.
In the resignation letter, the senator cited "careful reflection and personal deliberation" as the basis for his decision to withdraw his membership from the party in order to pursue other personal commitments and career paths. "I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026," the letter read. "After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths." Despite his exit, Hanga expressed gratitude to the ward leadership and members of the party for their support and cooperation during his time with the NDC. "I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party," he stated. "I cherish the relationships built and the experiences shared during our political activities together."
The senator also attached his official NDC membership card to the resignation letter and formally requested that his name be removed from the party's membership register at the ward level. "Please find attached my official NDC membership card. I request that my name be formally removed from the party register at the ward level," he wrote, while wishing the party and its members success in their future political activities.
Hanga's resignation comes amid intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians across the country reviewing their party affiliations and political alliances. The lawmaker, however, did not disclose whether he would join another political party or reveal his next political destination. His departure has fueled speculation about possible political realignments, with some reports suggesting that he may be considering a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Earlier in July 2026, Hanga had met with President Bola Tinubu, after which he issued a radio program stating, "I know Tinubu will win the Presidency, but his party would fail in Kano."
The senator's resignation comes just three months after he defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the NDC in May 2026, citing internal crises and factional disagreements within his former party. At the time of his defection, he was the only senator on the platform of the NDC in Kano. However, he recently lost the party's ticket to seek re-election for the Kano Central Senatorial District after the party nominated former Kano State Deputy Governor, Nasiru Gawuna, as its candidate for the 2027 election, a development that is believed to have influenced his decision to quit the party. His resignation is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Kano State, where the battle for political supremacy ahead of the 2027 elections is intensifying.
