A wave of fear has swept through the Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State following reports that suspected Lakurawa militants have entered the area, prompting urgent calls for immediate military intervention. The alarm was raised on Monday, August 3, 2026, by security analyst and conflict monitor Bakatsine, who disclosed the development in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account. According to him, credible reports indicate that the armed group has moved into Girkau, leaving residents gripped by fear over the possibility of an attack. "URGENT ALERT: Credible reports indicate that Lakurawa militants have entered Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, leaving residents in fear," Bakatsine wrote. He appealed to Nigerian security agencies to urgently deploy personnel to the community to avert what could become another deadly attack on civilians. "We urgently appeal to the Nigerian security agencies to deploy personnel to the area and take immediate action to protect innocent civilians," he stated.

The Lakurawa group has been linked to a series of deadly attacks, cattle rustling, and raids on communities across parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states in recent months, heightening concerns over worsening insecurity in Nigeria's North-West. The group, which has transitioned from a locally tolerated armed presence into a coercive militant actor, operates primarily in Sokoto and Kebbi states along the Nigeria–Niger border. Its activities have included the killing of currency traders at a border market in Gudu Local Government Area in January 2026, and the massacre of at least 12 people, including six who were burnt alive, in Lajinge village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area over the weekend of August 1-2, 2026. The Lajinge attack, which lasted several hours without any security intervention, saw the assailants operate with impunity, further underscoring the growing threat posed by the group.

As of the time of this report, the Sokoto State Government and security agencies had yet to officially comment on the reported presence of the militants in Girkau. It was not immediately clear whether the reported movement into the community had resulted in casualties or property destruction, but residents are said to be living in fear as they await a response from security forces. Bakatsine has urged Nigerians to amplify the warning on social media to draw the attention of the relevant authorities, stressing that sharing the alert could help save lives. The Lakurawa group, which was initially welcomed by rural communities in 2017 to protect them from escalating bandit violence, has since evolved into a serious security threat at the intersection of criminal activity and terrorism. The group is composed of Sahelian jihadists, armed herders, and local actors, and has been responsible for a series of violent incidents, including cattle rustling, attacks on villages, and the imposition of illegal taxes on local populations.

The reported entry of Lakurawa militants into Girkau is the latest in a series of security incidents that have plagued Sokoto State, where the overlapping presence of profit-driven bandits and ideological militants has paralyzed rural communities. Villages across the state have been deserted at night, and residents have repeatedly called on the government to take decisive action to protect them. The failure of security forces to respond to the Lajinge attack, where the assailants operated freely for hours, has further eroded public confidence in the government's ability to provide security. As the situation in Girkau remains tense, residents are appealing to the military and police to act swiftly to prevent another tragedy. The coming hours will be critical in determining whether the government will respond to the urgent appeal or allow the militants to consolidate their presence in yet another community, further emboldening a group that has already demonstrated its capacity for mass violence and terror.
