The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has showered praise on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for the transformation of Abuja's City Gate into a modern recreational and environmental landmark, describing the project as an outstanding example of urban renewal and a model for reclaiming neglected public spaces across the country. Speaking on Monday, August 3, 2026, during a ceremony at the Aso Rock Villa to honour the FCT Administration for its environmental efforts under the Renewed Hope Initiative's Green Nigeria Challenge, Senator Tinubu expressed amazement at the remarkable turnaround of the once-neglected facility, saying, "When I saw what he did with the City Gate, my God, unbelievable, unbelievable. I want to thank him. He's done very well".
The First Lady revealed that the remodelling of the City Gate perfectly reflects the objectives of the Green Nigeria Challenge, which was designed to encourage the reclamation of abandoned public spaces and the promotion of cleaner, healthier communities. She noted with disappointment, however, that despite a N50 million prize earmarked under the Community Category of the Challenge to encourage states to rehabilitate abandoned spaces and illegal dumpsites, no state submitted an entry. "It was a N50 million prize money, and they didn't enter. This was supposed to get our youth involved," she lamented, using the opportunity to appeal to the wives of state governors to mobilise young people into environmental clubs and sustainability initiatives in schools and tertiary institutions.
Drawing from her personal experience as a member of the Youth Environmental Programme for West Africa during her days at the College of Education, Senator Tinubu stressed the importance of engaging young Nigerians in environmental stewardship. "We have to engage our young people and make sure that they can help build. Everybody has something to contribute to this country. It's a great country, and that's why we are doing all we can," she said. The First Lady described the City Gate transformation as a physical manifestation of what the community category of the Green Challenge was designed to inspire, adding that the remodelled landmark now warmly welcomes all Nigerians and visitors to the nation's capital.
In his response, Minister Nyesom Wike disclosed that the First Lady personally inspired the City Gate transformation, revealing that it originated from her observations after returning from foreign trips. He recounted that she had challenged him on why Abuja had not matched the standard of city entrances seen in other countries despite frequent official trips abroad. "She called on me to say: 'Why do we travel out and we do not learn anything when we travel? Look at the way our city looks, look at the way city gates in other countries look. Why not do something to change it?'" Wike said. He explained that the FCT Administration subsequently engaged the original designers of the City Gate to develop a new concept that has since transformed the location into a vibrant public attraction visited even at night. "Today, by the grace of God, whenever you pass there, even at night, you see people gathered there. There is activity. That is what it is supposed to be," he said.
The City Gate project earned the FCT Administration an award and commendation from the Office of the First Lady under the Renewed Hope Initiative's Green Nigeria Challenge. Wike expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that it has further strengthened the administration's resolve to invest in more green spaces and recreational centres across the nation's capital. He announced plans to replicate the initiative in other parts of Abuja, including the Life Camp district, where an abandoned recreational park will be redesigned into a modern leisure and sporting facility. He described the state of the Life Camp park as unfortunate, noting that successive administrations had failed to develop a facility with significant recreational potential. "Our plan is to restore this park and provide modern facilities so that people living in this area can come here for their daily exercise, recreation and relaxation, take photographs and enjoy themselves, just as people do in advanced countries," he said.
Wike also announced plans to introduce an annual New Year fireworks display at the Abuja City Gate beginning in 2026, describing the initiative as part of efforts to align Abuja with other major capital cities around the world. "Like many cities across the world that usher in the New Year with fireworks, that is what we intend to do this year at the City Gate. By the grace of God, through the Renewed Hope Initiative, we will celebrate the New Year in that manner for the first time in this country," he said. The Minister stressed that environmental sustainability is central to urban development, emphasising that clean surroundings and well-maintained green spaces are hallmarks of world-class cities.
The First Lady's commendation and the FCT Minister's commitment to expanding recreational infrastructure reflect a growing recognition of the importance of public green spaces in improving the quality of life for residents and enhancing the nation's capital's aesthetic appeal. As Wike put it, "The First Lady has to be commended for the FCT keying into the Renewed Hope Green Initiative because she has always said we have to change our environment and create opportunities where people can gather and relax." With the successful transformation of the City Gate and the planned upgrade of the Life Camp park, Abuja is taking significant strides toward becoming a truly world-class capital city that offers its residents and visitors attractive, functional, and environmentally sustainable public spaces.
