The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received 37 Nigerian nationals repatriated from the Republic of Türkiye, marking another milestone in the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to facilitate the safe and dignified return of distressed citizens stranded abroad. The returnees arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday, August 3, 2026, aboard a chartered aircraft, following an official notification from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to a statement issued by the agency, NEMA's Abuja Operations Office immediately activated a coordinated reception mechanism involving relevant government agencies and humanitarian partners to ensure a seamless, dignified, and humane reception process for the returnees. The reception exercise included documentation, profiling, biometric registration, and medical screening, as well as the provision of immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, water, and medical care, before the returnees were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further reintegration processes.
Speaking during the reception, the Head of NEMA's Abuja Operations Office, Pharm. Zakari Abubakar, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of vulnerable Nigerians through sustained collaboration with relevant stakeholders. "At NEMA, our priority is to ensure that every returning Nigerian is treated with dignity, compassion and respect. We encourage our compatriots to embrace this opportunity for a fresh start, remain law-abiding, and take advantage of available government support programmes aimed at facilitating their successful reintegration into society," Abubakar said. He also commended the strong collaboration among participating agencies, stressing that coordinated efforts remain crucial to ensuring efficient reception procedures and long-term reintegration support for returning migrants.
The reception involved officials from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, airport authorities, security agencies, and other relevant humanitarian partners. The latest repatriation is part of a broader Federal Government initiative to assist distressed Nigerians abroad. In June 2026, NEMA received 123 Nigerians who voluntarily returned from Algeria under the Assisted Voluntary Return programme facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). Earlier in April 2026, the agency also welcomed 181 Nigerian returnees from Tripoli, Libya, under the same initiative aimed at ensuring their safe return and reintegration into society. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the orderly, safe, and dignified return of Nigerians from foreign countries, while also providing the necessary support for their successful reintegration into their communities.
