Spanish giants FC Barcelona have formally ruled out a move for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen this summer, citing the Nigerian forward's substantial salary expectations and high transfer valuation as insurmountable obstacles. The Catalan club, which had been monitoring the 27-year-old for weeks amid uncertainty over his future at Galatasaray, has decided that the overall cost of the deal does not make financial sense, according to multiple reports published on August 3 and 4, 2026.
The biggest stumbling block is Osimhen's wage package. The former Napoli striker reportedly earns around €15 million net per season at Galatasaray, in addition to bonuses and full ownership of his image rights. He has shown no willingness to reduce his demands, a financial commitment considered far too high for Barcelona, which is still operating under significant financial restrictions and is unwilling to disrupt its strict wage structure. The transfer fee would also represent a substantial investment, with Galatasaray reportedly valuing the 27-year-old at around €75 million. While his goalscoring record makes him an attractive option, Barcelona have concluded that the potential complications outweigh the benefits.
There are also concerns over Osimhen's temperament, with his personality reportedly viewed as a potential risk to dressing-room harmony. The negative attitude he is perceived to bring to the table is seen as something Barcelona simply cannot afford right now. With Robert Lewandowski having left the club at the end of the 2025/26 season to join MLS side Chicago Fire, Barcelona are in desperate need of a proven No. 9. However, they have decided that Osimhen is not the answer. The club is now exploring alternative targets, with Argentina forward Julián Álvarez reportedly their first choice to replace Lewandowski, though Atlético Madrid have so far refused to enter negotiations.
Osimhen's record explains the interest in his services. He scored 76 goals in 133 appearances for Napoli before moving to Galatasaray, where he has continued his impressive form with 59 goals in 74 matches. Despite Barcelona's withdrawal, Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as one of the strongest contenders for his signature, with the Premier League club reportedly making an opening offer of around €60 million, which Galatasaray rejected. The London club could return with an improved bid as they seek a proven frontman following a poor campaign. Galatasaray is reportedly unwilling to sell for anything less than double the €75 million they paid Napoli in the summer of 2025, meaning any interested club would need to budget close to €150 million. With Osimhen currently earning €21 million net per year at Galatasaray, clubs in Europe's top leagues would likely need to offer close to double that amount to match his existing package. Combined, those figures place a potential deal far outside the range Barcelona are prepared to consider given their current economic situation.
For Barcelona, the decision has already been made. Osimhen's quality is not in doubt; it is the financial package required to secure him that has ended their interest. The Catalan giants have formally decided against pursuing a deal, with his transfer fee and salary demands proving too steep at a time when they are navigating considerable financial pressure. As the transfer window continues, the Nigerian striker remains one of the most sought-after forwards in world football, but his next destination will not be the Camp Nou.
