A coalition of Nigerian legal practitioners under the auspices of the Lawyers in Defence of Democracy Initiative (LIDD) has announced that it will deploy members to provide legal support and monitor the protection of protesters' rights during the nationwide peaceful protest planned by the Take-It-Back Movement on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. In a press statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Joseph Aliu, the organisation said the decision followed the movement's call for peaceful demonstrations aimed at reminding the government of its obligations to citizens. "The Lawyers In Defence of Democracy Initiative notes that the Take-It-Back Movement has called for peaceful protests on August 5, aimed at reminding government of its obligations to the people it serves," the statement read.
LIDD said that, as an organisation committed to defending democracy and the rule of law, it considers it its responsibility to ensure that citizens exercising their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly are not left without legal protection. The organisation disclosed that it would work alongside the Take-It-Back Movement's Legal Aid Department throughout the protest, with members physically present at protest grounds to provide legal support and monitor the protection of protesters' rights.
The lawyers' group also appealed to both demonstrators and security agencies to conduct themselves in accordance with the law, urging all parties to "act within the bounds of the law and in a manner that upholds public order and the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution." The statement concluded with the declaration: "Silence is not an option!"
The Take-It-Back Movement had earlier formally notified the Nigeria Police Force of its intention to hold a nationwide peaceful protest on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, requesting the police to provide security, manage traffic, and ensure the safety of protesters, journalists, and members of the public. The notification, contained in a letter dated August 4, 2026, addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, stated that members of the movement intend to exercise their constitutionally and internationally guaranteed rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The protesters have listed several demands, including an end to insecurity, the immediate release of all political detainees, and the repeal of Nigeria's Cybercrime Act, which rights groups and activists have repeatedly criticised for allegedly being used to suppress free speech and target journalists and government critics.
The deployment of LIDD lawyers comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with civil society groups increasingly vocal about the need to protect civic space and constitutional freedoms. The group's intervention signals a growing determination among legal practitioners to ensure that citizens exercising their right to protest are not left without legal protection, and that the rule of law is upheld even in moments of public dissent.
