A devastating premature explosion has dealt a significant blow to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State, killing five suspected terrorists, including a medical officer, two foreign Arab Improvised Explosive Device (IED) technicians, and two bomb-making experts, according to intelligence sources and security analyst Zagazola Makama. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Maina Daya Village, located between Sabon Tumbu and Jubilaram, about 29 kilometres east of Monguno in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
The explosion happened while the group was allegedly assembling improvised explosive devices for deployment, suggesting the terrorists were preparing for further attacks along key military supply routes within the Sector 1 area of Operation HADIN KAI. The blast killed Usman Dan Fulani, described as an ISWAP medical officer, alongside two foreign Arab IED technicians and two suspected ISWAP bomb-making experts. The loss of such experienced bombmakers is considered a significant setback to ISWAP's IED network and could temporarily weaken the group's capability to carry out roadside bomb attacks in the Marte-Monguno axis.
Security analysts believe the accidental explosion has disrupted ISWAP's operational capacity, as the group has increasingly relied on IEDs to target military convoys and civilian traffic in the North-East. The deaths of the two foreign Arab technicians are particularly significant, as they suggest the presence of international expertise within the group's bomb-making cells. Military sources have disclosed that troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been directed to exploit the development by intensifying patrols, cordon-and-search operations, and precision offensive actions around Monguno, Marte, and Gamboru Ngala to prevent the terrorist group from regrouping or rebuilding its IED capability.
This incident comes as the Nigerian military continues its sustained offensive against Boko Haram and ISWAP in the Lake Chad region, with troops maintaining high operational readiness and intelligence-driven operations. The latest blow to ISWAP's bomb-making cell is expected to provide a window of opportunity for security forces to intensify pressure on insurgent hideouts and disrupt their ability to carry out attacks. However, the group has repeatedly demonstrated resilience, and security analysts caution that while the loss of experienced bombmakers is a setback, it may not permanently cripple ISWAP's IED capability.
