The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Friday, August 7, 2026, officially commissioned the newly completed 3.3-kilometre Adesan Road in Mowe, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, using the occasion to announce a significant breakthrough in the state's fight against kidnapping. The governor revealed that four additional suspects linked to the abduction of seven students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, have been arrested, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to six following the initial arrest of two gang members on Thursday, August 6, during the operation that led to the successful rescue of the students.
Addressing residents and stakeholders at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Abiodun described the rescue of the students and the arrest of the suspects as a major victory in the state's war against criminality. He declared that Ogun State, as Nigeria's industrial capital and gateway to the nation, would never become a safe haven for criminals. "Ogun State will not allow crime or criminality. Those who come here to test our resolve will be tracked down, smoked out, arrested, and made to face the full weight of the law," the governor warned. He attributed the successful operation to the coordinated efforts of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Ogun State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps), local hunters, and vigilantes.
Governor Abiodun also expressed appreciation to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), and other student bodies for their patience and understanding during the students' captivity. He acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the DSS, stating that the collaboration enabled security forces to work "night and day" to secure the victims' release. "Yesterday, we rescued all seven students alive. We have arrested four more of the kidnappers, while the remaining suspects are still on the run. We will arrest them as well," the governor assured.
Beyond the security updates, Governor Abiodun used the event to highlight his administration's infrastructure achievements, disclosing that 42 roads have been constructed or reconstructed across Ogun Central Senatorial District since 2019, with 12 of them located in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. He added that about 1,600 kilometres of roads have been completed across the state's three senatorial districts. Roads completed in Obafemi-Owode include the Abeokuta–Sagamu Interchange Road, Panseke–Adigbe Road, the revived Mowe–Ofada Road, and Adesan Road, among others. The governor noted that the new road would improve connectivity with neighbouring communities and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, promoting trade and easing movement for residents, traders, and students.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele; the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide; the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya; and the Baale of Adesan, Tajudeen Adesanolu. The Chairman of Obafemi-Owode Local Government, Hon. Adesina Ogunsola, praised the governor for continuing to invest in infrastructure, saying the project would benefit residents, traders, students, and motorists. The Commissioner for Works noted that Adesan Road was a key transport corridor that would improve connectivity and support economic activities in the area.
The arrest of the four additional suspects follows the rescue of the seven Gateway ICT Polytechnic students who were abducted in late July 2026. Security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the kidnapping gang, with Governor Abiodun reaffirming his administration's zero-tolerance stance on criminality and pledging that Ogun State would remain inhospitable to criminals. As the state continues to strengthen its security architecture and infrastructure, the governor's message was clear: Ogun is open for business, but closed to crime.
