A Miami courtroom fell silent on Monday, August 10, 2026, as former OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney, 30, was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter with a deadly weapon in the fatal stabbing of her Nigerian-American boyfriend, Christian Tobechukwu “Toby” Obumseli. The sentence, handed down more than four years after Obumseli's death on April 3, 2022, brought an end to a highly publicised case that had gripped both American and Nigerian audiences. But for Obumseli's family, the plea deal offered only a measure of accountability, not the justice they had long sought.
Clenney, who had initially faced a second-degree murder charge carrying a potential sentence of up to 30 years, entered the guilty plea as part of a negotiated agreement with prosecutors. The original murder charge was replaced with manslaughter with a deadly weapon, significantly reducing her potential prison exposure. Under the terms of the plea, she received credit for the nearly four years she has already spent in custody since her arrest in August 2022, leaving her with approximately two more years to serve behind bars before beginning five years of probation.
The case drew widespread attention because of the couple's volatile relationship and the conflicting accounts of what happened inside their luxury Miami condominium in the city's Edgewater neighbourhood. Obumseli, a 27-year-old cryptocurrency trader from the Dallas-Plano area of Texas who had attended Texas Tech University, was stabbed in the chest during a domestic dispute. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Obumseli died from his injuries.
Clenney, who also went by the online handle Courtney Tailor and had amassed over two million Instagram followers at the time of her arrest, maintained throughout the legal proceedings that she had acted in self-defence. Her lawyers had argued that Obumseli was abusive and that Clenney threw a knife at him while trying to protect herself during a confrontation. The defence had also argued that Clenney was the victim of an abusive relationship.
Prosecutors, however, presented a different account, painting a picture of a troubled relationship involving repeated domestic conflicts. Assistant State Attorney Shawn Abuhoff told the court that Clenney was accepting responsibility for her actions. The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office depicted Obumseli as a victim of domestic abuse, claiming the couple had a volatile and hostile relationship. The medical examiner's findings became particularly important to the prosecution's case, as prosecutors argued that the nature and location of Obumseli's wound did not support Clenney's account that she had simply thrown a knife from a distance.
The most poignant moments of the sentencing came when Obumseli's family addressed the court. His mother, Ocio Obumseli, delivered a heartbreaking victim impact statement that moved Clenney to tears. "The loss of Christian did not end April 4; we carry it with us every day," she said. "No sentence, no plea can bring back my son to me," she added. She also told the court: "Nothing can describe what it feels like for a mother to stand at the grave of her child. There are some things that will never happen to me now that he is gone. The birthdays and holidays we will not celebrate with him, the conversations we will never have, the person he will grow into — those losses will go well beyond today's court case". A family representative told the court that Obumseli "loved deeply" and remained in what they described as a destructive relationship despite previous incidents of violence. "A chair where a family gathers for holidays will always remain empty," the representative said.
The family's attorney, Larry Handfield, said the guilty plea provided some measure of closure because the family wanted Clenney to accept responsibility for Obumseli's death. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the plea agreement was reached "in full consultation and approval of Christian's family". "With this plea agreement, Christian Obumseli's family received the long-awaited news that Courtney Clenney accepted full responsibility for his death," Rundle said.
Beyond the prison sentence, Clenney will also be required to undergo mental health and substance abuse evaluations and treatment after her release. Prosecutors have further said she will not be permitted to financially benefit from the case. Assistant State Attorney Shawn Abuhoff stated: "We do believe that nobody should benefit financially from murdering somebody".
The case also generated public debate after old social media posts attributed to Obumseli resurfaced following his death. His family condemned the views expressed in the posts while continuing to demand accountability over his killing. The family had also filed a civil lawsuit against Clenney and companies connected to the apartment building, alleging battery and inadequate security. The claims against Clenney were resolved before the criminal plea agreement was announced.
Clenney's guilty plea brings an end to a criminal case that has lingered in the public spotlight for more than four years. She is now expected to spend about two more years in prison before beginning her five-year probation. But for the Obumseli family, as his mother said, "the loss of Christian did not end April 4". They carry it with them every day.
