Two separate fires broke out in Kano State on Monday, August 10, 2026, destroying an Access Bank generator in Dawakin Tofa and a family home in Kumbotso. Firefighters battled both blazes and managed to contain them before they could spread, the Kano State Fire Service confirmed on Tuesday.
The first fire started around 1:17 pm at an Access Bank branch in Dawanau, Dawakin Tofa. The cause was traced to a Mikano generator that caught fire and burned completely. The blaze also slightly damaged an electrical transformer at the bank. Firefighters from Dawanau station quickly arrived and stopped the fire from spreading to the rest of the building.
The second fire broke out around 6:19 pm at a residential house in Sabuwar Gandu, Sheka Gari, Kumbotso. The fire destroyed two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. Firefighters from Sharada station and nearby factories used water hoses to bring it under control.
No one was injured in either incident. The fire service is still investigating what caused both fires.
Fire service director Alhaji Sani Anas urged residents to stay alert and take safety measures like keeping fire extinguishers at home. "People should report fires quickly so we can respond fast and save lives and property," he said.
Kano State has seen many fire outbreaks this year. In May alone, firefighters recorded 58 fires and 13 deaths. The service continues to urge everyone to be careful with electrical equipment, generators and flammable items at home and in businesses. While the fire teams acted fast and prevented worse damage, experts say more needs to be done to stop fires from happening in the first place.
