A horrifying mix of tragedy and miracle unfolded on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, when newly signed Katsina United defender Chinedu Ozor was pronounced dead twice by two different hospitals, only for a mortuary attendant to discover that the footballer's hands were still moving while his body lay in the morgue. The Katsina United media officer, Nasir Gide, confirmed the sequence of events to multiple news outlets. "When we rushed him to a nearby hospital, he was confirmed dead by a doctor. We collected police report and took him back to Katsina General Hospital where he was also said to be dead. They took his body to the morgue there," Gide told The Punch.
The club had already begun mourning. Katsina United issued a somber statement, describing the incident as a "tragedy" and extending condolences to the player's family. Tributes poured in from across the league, with El-Kanemi Warriors, Rivers United, and other clubs expressing their grief.
But while preparations were being made to contact Ozor's family, an attendant at the mortuary noticed something that defied medical logic. The player's hands were moving. The discovery, first reported by grassroots sports journalist Prince CJ in a Facebook video, sparked an immediate reversal.
"Good news, I have gotten a very quick information now that Chinedu Ozor, the Katsina United player that collapsed during the friendly fixture against Niger Tornadoes at Mohammadu Dikko Stadium, his hand shook at the mortuary and they have rushed him back to the hospital, so there is a hope for him to survive," Prince CJ reported.
Ozor was rushed back to Katsina General Hospital and placed on oxygen in the ICU. One of his former clubs, Heartland FC, shared an update that confirmed the dramatic development. "Reliable sources say Chinedu Ozor has been moved from the mortuary to the hospital after reportedly showing signs of movement. He is currently on oxygen as medics work to revive him," the club posted on X.

Nasir Gide told TheCable that despite the movement observed by the attendant, the player remains in critical condition and the club is relying on medical experts. "The reports given from the medical examinations from both hospitals that we took him to. They confirmed to us that he is dead," Gide said. "But we don't know where or who saw his hands shaking, which makes his relatives say he is still alive and that we should take him to the ICU. The ICU request is from the relatives, and we cannot deny them that right, even though the doctors have confirmed that he is dead".
A player from Niger Tornadoes who featured in the match expressed his anguish to The Punch: "It was heartbreaking. We are hoping for a miracle". The incident has also prompted wider scrutiny of medical preparedness at football venues. One of the participating clubs in the preseason tournament, Barau FC, withdrew from the competition, accusing organizers of allowing the tournament to continue despite the harrowing event.
The case has drawn comparisons to previous tragedies in Nigerian football. It comes exactly one year after Shooting Stars assistant coach Akin Olowokere collapsed and died during a training session, and recalls the 2020 death of Nasarawa United defender Chineme Martins, who died during a league match against Katsina United. Following Martins' death, the Nigeria Football Federation mandated that league venues must have adequate medical equipment and personnel, but questions are now being raised about whether those standards are being enforced.
