The Kano Emirate has introduced a mandatory drug test as a prerequisite for anyone seeking to ascend a traditional throne, a groundbreaking policy aimed at ensuring that traditional rulers are physically and mentally fit to provide responsible leadership. The District Head of Dambatta, Dr Mansur Adnan, announced the measure on Saturday, August 22, 2026, during a sensitisation programme on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking held at his palace in Dambatta, Kano State. Adnan stated that the decision was driven by the harmful effects of drug abuse on individuals and society, stressing that traditional rulers must be capable of providing effective leadership in their communities.
The new requirement means that prospective traditional rulers will now be expected to undergo drug tests before they can ascend thrones under the Kano Emirate. The policy adds drug screening to the measures being used by the emirate to promote responsible leadership and support efforts against drug abuse. The sensitisation programme brought together district and ward heads from Dambatta Local Government Area to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
Speaking at the event, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Zonal Commander in Dambatta, Zailani Muhammad, urged traditional leaders and residents to cooperate with the agency by reporting drug traffickers and locations where youths sell or consume illicit drugs. Muhammad stressed that success in the fight against drug abuse required the cooperation of government authorities, traditional rulers, parents, teachers and other members of society. He also educated participants on the effects of drug abuse, factors that could lead youths into drug use and warning signs parents should watch for in their children.
The Dambatta Divisional Police Officer, SP Ibrahim Kwasarawa, linked a significant proportion of crimes committed by youths in communities to drug abuse. Kwasarawa urged parents to monitor their children and guide them towards positive behaviour. The latest measure by the Kano Emirate is part of broader efforts to strengthen the integrity of traditional leadership and promote healthier communities across the state.
