The All Progressives Congress chairmanship candidate for Ohaozara Local Government Area, Osbourne Umahi, has emerged victorious in the Ebonyi State local government elections held on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The 28-year-old son of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, secured the council seat after a campaign that focused on grassroots development, economic expansion and improved local administration. Following his declaration as chairman-elect, Umahi announced that he would forgo his official salary and allowances throughout his tenure, stating that his motivation for seeking office was service rather than personal financial gain.
Umahi, an engineer and entrepreneur, cast his vote at his Onuofukulu polling unit in Umunaga, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area on Saturday morning. Speaking to journalists after voting, he commended the peaceful conduct of the election and expressed optimism that the results would reflect the wishes of the people. "I'm satisfied with the conduct of the election so far. I'm happy to see that everything has been peaceful," Umahi said. He added that he expected the peaceful atmosphere to continue until the conclusion of the electoral process and the collation of results.
The young politician had secured the APC ticket earlier in the year after emerging as the sole cleared candidate for the Ohaozara chairmanship election. He reportedly received all 55 delegate votes at the party's January 2026 primary election. His emergence at 28 years old has fueled conversations around generational transition in Nigerian politics and the growing participation of young professionals in grassroots administration.
During his campaign, Umahi presented himself as a new-generation politician seeking to combine private-sector experience with public-sector administration. He promised to bring efficiency, innovation and accountability to local government administration. His campaign priorities included infrastructure development, youth empowerment, job creation, agricultural development and improved security across Ohaozara. He also pledged to improve roads connecting farming communities to markets and strengthen the delivery of basic services across the local government.
Umahi's decision to reject his salary and allowances has drawn significant attention. He said his decision was driven by a desire to prioritise the development of Ohaozara over personal financial benefits and to ensure that more of the local government's resources were channelled into projects and programmes that would directly benefit residents rather than personal remuneration. "The decision is intended to demonstrate that my motivation for seeking office is service rather than personal enrichment," he was quoted as saying.
The election was organised by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission as part of the state's local government polls, with reports indicating that the voting process was generally peaceful across several areas. Other political leaders and government officials who participated in the election also commended the exercise. The Commissioner for Special Duties, Valentine Okike-Uzor, urged whoever emerged chairman to regard himself as the leader of all residents of the local government, irrespective of political affiliation. Senator Anthony Ani, representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District, described the election as evidence of the state's commitment to democracy.
Osbourne Umahi is the son of Senator David Umahi, who served as Governor of Ebonyi State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu. The younger Umahi's victory further strengthens the political presence of the Umahi family in Ebonyi State. With his administration now set to begin, residents of Ohaozara will be closely monitoring the implementation of his campaign promises and his pledge to forgo official remuneration during his tenure. The coming months will provide the first test of his ability to translate those promises into tangible results for the people of Ohaozara.
