The Kaduna State Police Command has rescued three kidnapped victims, including Alhaji Hamza Gimi, and dislodged a suspected bandits' hideout in Makarfi Local Government Area following a fierce gun battle on Thursday, August 20, 2026, that forced the abductors to flee into the surrounding bushes. The police said the operation around Gidan Mijin Gwaggo, Durum, was conducted by a patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer of Makarfi Division, in collaboration with local vigilantes, acting on credible intelligence concerning suspicious movements in the area. When the security team arrived at the location, the suspected kidnappers opened fire, triggering a fierce gun duel that compelled the assailants to flee with gunshot injuries.
Following the exchange, a thorough search of a house belonging to one Yakubu Sule revealed that the building had been used as a hideout by the suspected kidnappers. Three kidnapped victims who were being held captive in the house were discovered and rescued unharmed. They were identified as Alhaji Hamza Gimi and two others. The police also recovered a Boxer motorcycle suspected to have been used by the kidnappers from the premises. The rescued victims have since been reunited with their families, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects, some of whom are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter.
The Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State Command, Rabiu Muhammad, commended the police personnel and local vigilantes for their prompt response and collaboration. He also assured residents of Makarfi and other parts of Kaduna State of the command's continued commitment to intelligence-led policing and stronger cooperation with communities to combat criminal activities. This successful rescue operation follows a separate incident on August 19, 2026, when police rescued 75 kidnapped travellers, including men, women and children, who were abducted by armed men in Folwaya Village, near Birnin Gwari. In that operation, a timely tip-off from the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Birnin Gwari branch, led to the rescue of victims who had been concealed inside a cave in a mountainous area.
The Kaduna State Police Command has intensified its operations against banditry and kidnapping, with the Commissioner urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements. He also cautioned against taking the law into their own hands, warning that such actions could lead to the loss of innocent lives. The recent successes demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and community collaboration in tackling insecurity in Kaduna State, as security forces continue to sustain pressure on criminal elements operating across the state.
