Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, operating under the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded a significant double victory against criminal networks in Zamfara State, arresting three suspected gun runners and rescuing six kidnapped victims in separate operations conducted on Sunday, August 23, 2026. The successful operations, which took place along the Kauran Namoda–Shinkafi and Anka–Gummi axes, underscore the military's intensified efforts to disrupt terrorist logistics and protect civilians in Nigeria's troubled North-West region. According to a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 1 Brigade Nigerian Army Gusau, Captain Yusuf Mohammed, the arrests were made at approximately 2:05 p.m. during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Kauran Namoda–Shinkafi Road.
The operation led to the interception of a Golf Wagon with registration number BMJ-143AA, carrying three suspects identified as 20-year-old Lukman Sulaiman, 18-year-old Nafiu Isa, and 60-year-old Adamu Lawali, the driver of the vehicle. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered a well-concealed arsenal: one AK-103-2 rifle, a magazine, and 30 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, all cleverly hidden inside a bag of millet. The discovery of the weapon in such a manner highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by criminal networks to smuggle arms into the region, using everyday commodities as decoys to evade security checkpoints.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly transporting the weapon to Yar-Galadima in Maru Local Government Area. During interrogation, the two younger suspects claimed that an Alhaji resident in Gusau, whom they identified as their father, had provided the funds used to purchase the millet used to conceal the weapon. They further alleged that the firearm was intended for delivery to one Tijjani Goguwa of Yar-Galadima. The Army has taken the suspects, weapon, ammunition, and the vehicle into custody for further investigation and necessary legal action, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the alleged recipient of the weapon, Tijani Goguwa. This arrest represents a critical blow to the supply chain that fuels banditry and terrorism, as the interception of even a single weapon can prevent numerous attacks on vulnerable communities.
In a separate but equally significant operation on the same day, troops deployed at Forward Operating Base Anka demonstrated the increasing effectiveness of modern surveillance technology in combating insecurity. At approximately 2:30 p.m., surveillance cameras detected an attack on a vehicle by suspected terrorists at Gadan Manya along the Anka–Gummi Main Supply Route. The troops immediately mobilised to the location and engaged the attackers as they attempted to force the occupants of the vehicle into the bush. The swift intervention by the troops disrupted the terrorists' operation, compelling them to abandon all six victims and flee the area. The six victims were subsequently rescued and evacuated to General Hospital Anka for medical attention. Three of the rescued persons sustained minor bodily injuries and are currently receiving treatment in stable condition. Efforts were also made to recover the vehicle involved in the incident.
