The Edo State Police Command has intensified security operations across two communities in the state following separate violent incidents on Sunday, August 23, 2026, that left one person dead, several others injured, and security personnel assaulted in attacks that have once again exposed the fragility of peace in parts of the state. In a press release issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the Command confirmed that 11 suspects have been arrested in connection with an attack on police detectives and Edo State Security Corps personnel in Sobe, while four others were arrested in a separate incident in Ewatto involving suspected cultists.
The Sobe incident began at about 10:00 a.m. when one Ojo Gabriel of Atoruru Village reported a case of assault and malicious damage at the Sobe Division, alleging that youths had attacked his residence and damaged the window glasses of his vehicles. Police detectives and ESSC personnel were immediately mobilised to the scene. However, upon sighting the security personnel, the youths turned on them, damaging the side glass of the police patrol vehicle and assaulting members of the Edo State Security Corps. Two locally-made single-barrel guns belonging to the security personnel were also taken away by the attackers. Three ESSC personnel — Tunde Ali, Izedu Monday, and Charles Ighororo — sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
During the confrontation, three unidentified youths sustained pellet injuries, and one was later confirmed dead while receiving treatment at David and Stella Hospital, Sabongida-Ora. His remains have been deposited at Heavenly Home Mortuary, Sabongida-Ora, while efforts are ongoing to establish his identity and contact his family. The police have arrested 11 suspects in connection with the incident, and the stolen guns have been recovered. Security has been reinforced in the area by police and military personnel, and normalcy has been restored.
In a separate incident at Ewatto, at about 12:20 p.m. on the same day, the Command received a distress call reporting an attack on Edo State Security Network personnel Martins Enahoro by suspected members of the Aro Berger confraternity, including persons popularly known as Gbozia and Gezo, among others. Preliminary investigation revealed that during the confrontation, Enahoro, while attempting to defend himself, stabbed one of the attackers identified as Gbozia. Enahoro subsequently sustained multiple cut injuries. Both men were rushed to God's Will Hospital, Ewohimi, where they were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. Their remains have been deposited at the mortuary pending further investigation.
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the Ewatto incident, two of whom have confessed to belonging to the Vikings and Aiye confraternity cults. All suspects have been transferred to the Area Command Headquarters for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects. The Command has deployed Police Mobile Force, Squadron 82, as reinforcement to the area and assures members of the public that investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Patrick Daaor, has warned that attacks on security personnel are criminal offences and will not be tolerated. He urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding and to provide the police with useful information that could assist the ongoing investigations. He reiterated the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that anyone found culpable is made to face the law. The incidents have highlighted the ongoing security challenges in parts of Edo State, where clashes between communities and security forces, as well as cult-related violence, continue to pose a threat to public safety. The police have assured the public that they will sustain operations to prevent further violence.
