Troops conducting joint security operations under the 2 Division Area of Responsibility have rescued a 28-year-old kidnap victim and recovered an AK-47 rifle following a fierce gun battle with suspected kidnappers in Kogi State. The operation took place at about 3:00 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, when soldiers on patrol from Patrol Base Obajana intercepted a man identified as Hussaini Shehu. Preliminary information gathered by the troops indicated that Shehu had allegedly been abducted from the Abaji area of the Federal Capital Territory about five days before his rescue.
Following his recovery, the victim provided useful information to the troops and led them to the location where he had allegedly been held captive. On reaching the area, the troops came under attack from suspected kidnappers, resulting in a gun battle. During the exchange of gunfire, the suspects were reportedly forced to abandon an AK-47 rifle and flee into the surrounding area. The troops subsequently recovered the firearm, while the rescued victim was evacuated to a military medical facility for medical attention.
Security personnel have intensified efforts to track the fleeing suspects and prevent them from regrouping or carrying out further attacks in the area. The successful operation underscores the importance of intelligence gathering and rapid response in tackling kidnapping activities, particularly along the FCT-Kogi corridor, which has recently come under security scrutiny. Authorities are expected to sustain patrols and intelligence-led operations in the affected areas as security agencies continue efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the corridor. The latest operation highlights how information obtained from rescued victims can be crucial in tracking kidnapping networks and improving the chances of rescuing abducted persons alive.
