The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and former Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola, has strongly condemned the escalating post-election violence in parts of Osun State, describing the attacks on citizens as "a grave assault on the peace, heritage and democratic values" of the people. In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, by his Special Adviser, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Oyetola expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of lives following the August 15 governorship election in which Governor Ademola Adeleke was re-elected.
The violence intensified on Monday, August 24, with a deadly clash at the Naira and Kobo motor park in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area. According to police reports, two civilians were killed and two police officers sustained serious injuries during an attack by suspected political thugs. The police said unidentified assailants attacked a patrol team responding to a distress call, opening fire on officers and snatching an AK-47 rifle, which was then used to kill two innocent civilians.
Oyetola, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressed that "no political ambition, localised transition or commercial interest could ever justify the loss of human life". He urged all stakeholders to reject violence and embrace dialogue, declaring that "politics must be a vehicle for development, not a catalyst for bloodshed". He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and called on the Osun State Police Command and other security agencies to act decisively to restore order and protect residents.
The minister urged security agencies to deploy adequate personnel to volatile locations, reclaim public spaces from hoodlums, and ensure that all those responsible for the killings and other acts of violence are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. He further appealed to residents across the state to prioritise peace and restraint, warning that the progress and prosperity of Osun must not be sacrificed on the altar of political or commercial interests. Oyetola reaffirmed his commitment to the peace, security and development of Osun State, urging citizens to work together to preserve the state's long-standing reputation for civility, enterprise and democratic values.
