The Niger State Police Command has dealt a significant blow to criminal elements terrorizing Minna and its environs with the arrest of five suspected members of an armed robbery syndicate and the recovery of a Beretta pistol with two rounds of live ammunition. The breakthrough followed an investigation into a robbery incident at Sauka-Kahuta, where armed men carted away laptops, mobile phones, motorcycles and other valuables.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Tudun-Wada Division received a report at about 6:00 a.m. on August 11, 2026, that armed robbers had invaded Sauka-Kahuta. Operatives visited the scene, recovered some exhibits, and commenced an investigation that led to the arrest of the gang leader, a 25-year-old man from the Maitumbi area, on August 17, 2026, behind the U.K. Bello Theatre Centre. The suspect then led detectives to arrest other members of the syndicate.
The other suspects include three men aged 27, 35, and 28, who were arrested at different locations in Niger and Nasarawa states. All five suspects are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further questioning. During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted to carrying out armed robbery operations in several parts of Minna, including Mandela, Sauka-Kahuta, Barkin-Sale, Farm Centre, and Highpoint areas.
Further investigation revealed that a 50-year-old man from the Maitumbi area had been keeping the syndicate's firearm. Police moved to the location on August 19, 2026, arrested the man, and recovered a Beretta pistol with two rounds of live ammunition in his possession. The police also uncovered information suggesting that the suspects regularly sold stolen items to a receiver identified as Ahmed, also known as Genuine, of the Maitumbi area. Efforts to arrest the alleged receiver are ongoing.
The successful operation has restored calm to the affected communities, with residents expressing relief that the gang responsible for a series of robberies has been dismantled. The police have assured the public that they will continue to intensify operations to rid the state of criminal elements and protect lives and property.
