A security guard identified only as Stanley was shot dead during a suspected cult attack at Royale Estate in the Sangotedo area of Ajah, Lagos State, on Friday evening, August 21, 2026. The incident occurred between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., when two unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire on the guard, and fled the scene.
According to a source who spoke with PUNCH Metro, the victim was shot more than three times before being allegedly shot in the head. “They just stormed the estate and started shooting. Stanley, the security man on duty, was shot several times, and in the head too, before they shot in the air and fled the area,” the source said.
Confirming the incident on Monday, August 24, 2026, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, told PUNCH Metro that the victim was shot by two unknown individuals on a motorcycle. “The incident occurred. He was shot by two unknown individuals on a motorcycle. The command has launched an investigation into the incident. No suspect yet,” she said.
Residents and colleagues described the late security guard as a familiar presence at the estate, where he had been responsible for maintaining watch over the premises. The sudden incident has left those who knew him in shock and has heightened anxiety among residents of the community. Sangotedo, a growing residential community in the Ajah axis, has experienced periodic security concerns in recent times. The killing of a guard on active duty has intensified calls for improved protection of both residents and the personnel tasked with safeguarding private estates.
The incident comes weeks after a security guard identified as Godwin was allegedly killed by suspected cultists in the Abule Ijesha area of Yaba, Lagos State. In that attack, the assailants arrived in a vehicle, shot Godwin near his duty post, and allegedly attacked him with an axe.
As of Saturday, August 22, no further details on suspects or motive had been made public. The death of Stanley has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by security workers across Lagos, many of whom operate with limited support while protecting lives and property in an increasingly challenging urban environment. Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, and the command has launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
