Human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Department of State Services of secretly placing a GPS tracking device on the security vehicle he used during his visit to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference. Sowore made the allegation on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in a post shared on his social media accounts, where he also published the International Mobile Equipment Identity number of the device, vowing to uncover the DSS operatives behind the surveillance operation.
According to Sowore, the tracking device was discovered after his security team noticed suspicious movements around his convoy following his speech at a gathering organised by the Kay Hikers group. The team subsequently decided to switch vehicles, a move that allegedly led to the discovery of an electronic device attached underneath the security vehicle they had been using. “The lawless @OfficialDSSNG has apparently been tracking my movements since I arrived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference,” Sowore wrote. “After my speech at the Kay Hikers gathering, we noticed some strange movements and decided to switch vehicles. That was when we discovered an electronic tracking device attached underneath the security vehicle we had used that night. They are really scared!”
Sowore identified the device as a Spytec GPS GL300 tracker, a subscription-based tracking device commonly used for asset and vehicle monitoring. He disclosed the IMEI number associated with the device as 860201067972185. The activist said the discovery had raised serious questions over who deployed the tracker and the purpose behind placing it on the vehicle. In a direct challenge to the secret police, Sowore declared that he would turn the tables on his alleged surveillors. “We will keep tracking the trackers at DSS until we establish exactly who deployed this device and we know their intention already,” he stated.
The allegation comes amid Sowore’s increasingly confrontational relationship with the Nigerian government and security agencies as he prepares to contest the 2027 presidential election. The AAC candidate has remained one of the most vocal critics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, repeatedly attacking government policies and accusing political leaders of worsening the economic hardship confronting Nigerians. His latest allegation came shortly after he addressed the NBA conference in Port Harcourt, where he launched a blistering attack on several prominent Nigerian politicians, including former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.
Sowore also posted a video purportedly showing the electronic device recovered from underneath the vehicle. However, there was no independent evidence contained in Sowore’s post establishing that the device was planted by DSS operatives. The agency had also not publicly confirmed responsibility for the alleged surveillance at the time of filing this report. As of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the DSS had not issued any official response to Sowore's allegations. The identity of whoever placed the electronic device under the vehicle remains unconfirmed, and Sowore’s allegation that it was connected to DSS surveillance has not been independently established.
The development has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the alleged surveillance of a presidential candidate. Supporters of Sowore have hailed his decision to expose the device and demand accountability from the security agency, while others have called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
