The German Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have issued a firm warning to Nigerian visa applicants, stating clearly that they do not work with visa agents or any third-party intermediaries, and that all appointment bookings are completely free of charge. The message, reiterated in multiple official communications, is a direct response to the growing exploitation of desperate applicants by fraudulent agents who charge exorbitant fees for services that are meant to be free and accessible to all.
According to the German missions, the appointment booking process is free, and the consulate does not cooperate with agencies or third parties offering appointment bookings for a fee. Applicants are advised to use only the official online booking system, and the embassy has stressed that appointments are not handled through phone calls or email requests. The embassy further stated that each applicant must book a separate slot, including children, and warned that the appointment booking process is completely free of charge. Applicants were also advised to be cautious of anyone requesting payment for appointment bookings.
The warning follows a pattern of widespread fraud where touts and unofficial agents secure appointments for fees ranging from N50,000 to N120,000, capitalising on the high demand for German visas and the limited availability of slots. The German missions have made it clear that they do not have any affiliation with third-party agents. They have also cautioned against reliance on unofficial agents or third parties, noting that accurate information is available through official platforms. The German Embassy has also advised applicants to verify information only through official channels, stressing that any genuine change to the process will always be announced on official platforms.
The warning comes amid a broader crackdown on visa fraud and a significant shift in Germany's visa application process. As of January 1, 2025, Germany's new consular services portal switched its visa application system worldwide online, allowing applicants to complete the bulk of the process virtually. Applicants are required to complete an online form specific to their visa category through the Consular Services Portal and upload supporting documents for preliminary review by German consular staff. After the documents are reviewed, applicants are invited to schedule an in-person appointment, where biometric data is taken. Depending on the applicant's location, the appointment will be at the German Embassy in Abuja or the German Consulate in Lagos. Alternatively, applicants can go through one of the newly established VFS Global Visa Application centres in Abuja or Lagos, which now manage biometrics and document collection on Germany's behalf.
The German missions have also warned against the use of third-party agents for student visa applications. In March 2026, the German embassy announced that all applications for student visas would now be handled exclusively through a visa application centre operated by VFS Global in Lekki, Lagos. The embassy cautioned against reliance on unofficial agents or third parties, noting that accurate information is available through its official platforms. This move is part of a broader effort to streamline the process and reduce fraud, but it has also created opportunities for scammers to pose as agents offering to expedite the process for a fee.
The German mission's warning is not an isolated incident. In a joint advisory, a coalition of European and other foreign nations cautioned visa and permit applicants against the use of fraudulent documents, unlicensed intermediaries, and payments made to unauthorised individuals or agencies. The Nigeria Police Force has also warned travellers against rising visa scam tactics, advising applicants to be cautious of individuals or agents who claim they can guarantee visa approvals, offer unusually fast processing, or insist on payments outside official platforms.
The German Embassy's warning is a crucial reminder for Nigerian applicants: the visa application process is designed to be transparent and free of charge, and any agent asking for payment for an appointment is operating outside the law. Applicants who fall victim to these scams risk losing their money and potentially jeopardising their visa applications. The embassy has urged applicants to report any suspicious activity and to always use official channels for their applications.
