Suspected bandits launched a coordinated attack on Jaga and Nasarawa communities in Mai Nika Ward, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, killing one person, injuring another, rustling a large number of cattle and stealing a motorcycle. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, threw the communities into panic as the armed men stormed the area, shooting sporadically and rustling livestock before attempting to flee with their loot.
According to security sources, the bandits invaded the communities in large numbers, targeting residents and livestock. One person was killed during the assault, while another sustained injuries. The attackers also made away with a motorcycle and a significant number of cattle, worsening the already precarious security situation in the area, which has witnessed repeated bandit attacks in recent months.
However, as the bandits withdrew from the Gwarzo axis, troops of the Joint Task Force, operating in the area, intercepted them in a well-coordinated ambush. The troops, who had been alerted to the attack, moved swiftly to block the bandits' escape route, engaging them in a fierce gun battle. The ambush proved devastating for the criminals, with several of them killed in the exchange. Six bodies were left at the scene, while others were arrested. Troops also recovered weapons, motorcycles and the rustled livestock, dealing a significant blow to the criminal network operating in the area.
The swift response of the troops prevented the bandits from escaping with their loot and ensured that no security personnel were injured during the operation. The recovery of the rustled livestock and weapons is a major victory in the ongoing fight against banditry in Kano State, which has seen a surge in attacks in recent months. Residents of Gwarzo and surrounding communities have expressed relief at the successful operation, commending the troops for their bravery and swift action. The operation follows similar successful interventions by the Joint Task Force in Gwarzo, including an ambush on March 1, 2026, that recovered 257 stolen livestock from rustlers who had attacked Mainika village.
Despite these successes, the persistent attacks have fueled frustration among residents, who have previously staged protests and blocked highways to demand action against the worsening insecurity. The latest attack and the successful military response highlight the ongoing security challenges in Kano's border communities, where bandits from neighbouring states have continued to launch raids. The Kano State Government has been urged to strengthen security measures in the area to prevent further attacks. As the investigation continues, the arrested suspects are expected to face prosecution, while the recovered cattle are to be returned to their owners. The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
