Senators from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, under the aegis of the Northern Senators Forum (NSF), have issued a strong demand to the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and all relevant security agencies to intensify rescue operations and secure the immediate and safe release of all persons abducted in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The forum also called for a comprehensive review of the security architecture in Niger State and the wider North-Central region to address emerging threats and prevent future attacks.
In a statement on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the Chairman of the NSF, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua (APC, Katsina Central), expressed deep shock and sadness over the attack. He condemned the assault on the Kpenya Mosque and the villages of Gidan-Zana and Kpenya in the Dekara District, which reportedly led to the abduction of worshippers and residents on Friday, August 22, 2026.
Senator Yar'Adua described the targeting of innocent worshippers in a mosque and defenceless rural communities as "not only cowardly but an attack on our shared humanity and faith". He extended the forum's condolences to the government and people of Niger State, particularly the families of those abducted and those reportedly killed.
The forum expressed particular concern over reports that the attackers had planted landmines in the affected areas and carried out further abductions to use the victims as potential bargaining chips. The NSF called on the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and other security agencies to intensify ongoing operations and ensure the rescue effort prioritises the safety of the victims.
Beyond the immediate rescue operation, the NSF urged the Federal Government to provide urgent relief, medical support, and additional security reinforcement to affected communities in Borgu and other vulnerable border areas. Senator Yar’Adua stressed the need for a comprehensive review of the security architecture in Niger State and the wider North-Central region to address emerging threats and prevent further attacks. The forum reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Presidency and state governments to restore peace, protect lives, and uphold the dignity of the people across Northern Nigeria.
Local authorities have reported that about 30 people were killed and at least 80 were abducted during the attack. The attack comes amid continuing security challenges confronting rural and border settlements in the North. For the affected families, the immediate priority remains the safe return of their loved ones, while the call by the Northern Senators Forum places renewed pressure on security agencies to accelerate their efforts.
