The governorship ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kaduna State has been thrown into deep uncertainty, with the party's state chairman declaring that no candidate has yet been validly recognised for the 2027 election, despite competing claims from two prominent politicians. Evangelist Mordecai Sunday Ibrahim, the Kaduna State Chairman of the NDC, made this clarification on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, during a press conference in Kaduna, amid mounting pressure from aspirants Barrister Mohammed Sani Abbas and former Senator Danjuma Tellah La'ah, both of whom have laid claim to the party's ticket.
Ibrahim explained that the controversy over the party's ticket remains unresolved at both the state and national levels. “The bitter truth is that both at the state and national levels, the decision as to who is the governorship candidate of Kaduna State, whether Barrister Mohammed Sani Abbas or Senator Danjuma Tellah La'ah, has not been taken,” he stated. He disclosed that he had previously been the party's recognised governorship candidate but voluntarily withdrew from the race, formally communicating his decision to the NDC National Chairman and the Kaduna State Resident Electoral Commissioner, in compliance with Section 31 of the Electoral Act 2026.
The chairman dismissed Abbas's claim of having won a governorship primary, describing it as a falsehood. “It is highly unfortunate for a member of the temple of justice to spew such lies that he participated in a primary election which he won, knowing same to be outright falsehood. Nothing can be farther from the truth than this dishonest claim,” Ibrahim said. He further disclosed that two other aspirants, Zariyi Madaki and Ibrahim Abdulkarim, had withdrawn from the contest in favour of La'ah during a consensus meeting held at the party's national secretariat.
Ibrahim insisted that the party cannot resolve the matter through competing declarations and must adhere to proper internal procedures. He noted that the party must organise a substitution primary election to produce a validly recognised candidate, as efforts to reach a consensus have failed. “By the provision of Section 31 of the Electoral Act 2026, Nigeria Democratic Congress is now only left with the option of organising a substitution primary election for a validly recognised candidate to emerge since they have been unable to reach a consensus; thus anything short of this will be illegal,” he warned. The Kaduna State Working Committee has endorsed Ibrahim's position, with several party officials signing the statement. The latest development has further complicated preparations within the NDC ahead of the 2027 Kaduna governorship election, as the party now faces mounting pressure to resolve the dispute through a recognised internal electoral process.
