A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Kanya town, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as hundreds of displaced families pour in after fleeing their communities following waves of bandit attacks that began on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
People from Dpindu, Dkwala, Kumdunku, Batawa, Chediya, and Rafingora villages have abandoned their homes and are now camped in Kanya, struggling to find food and safety. The attacks forced them to leave in a hurry, with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Some families made the journey on foot. Others carried children on their shoulders and whatever belongings they could grab before the gunmen arrived.
The Chairman of Danko/Wasagu LGA is reportedly travelling from Gusau after being called to the area. But with no clear government response in sight, traditional rulers under the Kanya district have stepped in to provide food and support. Their efforts, however, are nowhere near enough. The displaced families are sleeping in the open, with no shelter, no clean water, and no guarantee that the next attack won't reach them too.
And the attacks haven't stopped. Reports from the area say a young man named Hamza from Dkwala was targeted on Wednesday, and several people were abducted today. The bandits are still in the area. The fear is real, and it is spreading.
For the people who fled, their villages are now ghost towns. Their farms, their livestock, their homes – all left behind. They now sit in Kanya, uncertain of what comes next, hoping that someone will notice their suffering and help.
The images from the scene show traumatised children, weary mothers, and elderly men sitting under the sun with no shade, no food, and no clear plan. These are not numbers on a spreadsheet. They are real people. They are families who once had dreams and farms and futures. Now they are just trying to survive another hour.
As one displaced man put it, "We left our homes with nothing. We walked for hours, carrying our children, running from men with guns. We are here now, but we have no food. We don't know when we will eat."
The people of Kanya are doing what they can, but the needs are too great. They are asking for help from the government and from anyone who can hear their cry. Without urgent intervention, this crisis will only get worse.
For now, they wait. They wait for food. They wait for shelter. They wait for peace.
