The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria has taken a decisive step to address the recurring menace of building collapses across the country by inducting 2,001 new engineering practitioners and approving a raft of stringent enforcement measures. The decisions were reached at the Council's 190th Ordinary Meeting held on July 9, 2026, at its headquarters in Abuja.
COREN's Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Professor O.A.U. Uche, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, August 27, 2026. According to the statement, the newly inducted practitioners comprise 1,410 Engineers, 227 Engineering Technologists, 15 Engineering Technicians, 334 Engineering Craftsmen, and 15 Expatriate Practitioners. The Council also approved the registration of 33 engineering firms operating in various areas of engineering practice.
Worried by the devastating toll of engineering failures and building collapses, COREN approved a comprehensive regulatory strategy. The measures include a competency development programme for Engineering Regulation Inspection Officers, a nationwide public awareness campaign, and an integrated digital compliance and verification platform. Other measures include mandatory COREN compliance for engineering procurement and approvals, stronger Engineering Compliance Inspectorate Units, and stricter enforcement of annual practising licence requirements. The Council also approved the establishment of a National Engineering Practice Database and ordered a nationwide compliance audit of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to assess adherence to the enhanced entry-point policy for engineers in the public service.
In a bid to strengthen quality assurance in engineering education, COREN approved the implementation of the National Engineering Admission Quota and Carrying Capacity Enforcement Framework. It also adopted the Engineering Sliding Scale of Fees in Nigeria and revised the terms of reference for its Codes and Standards Committee.
On the skills development front, COREN approved the automation of registration for engineering artisans and Skills Training Centres through its portal. It also directed collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education to develop National Occupational Standards for various technical occupations. Additionally, the Council considered certification examination results from seven training centres involving 478 candidates, of whom 177 passed. It directed the adoption of the COREN/NESP-approved Solar Photovoltaic Installation Training Curriculum at Enerplaz Paygo Solutions, Port Harcourt.
COREN also granted full accreditation to three companies — Sato Engineering Services Limited, Ibadan; EtinPower Limited, Benin; and CeeSolar Energy Limited, Abuja — under its Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certification Scheme, implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme.
Regional stakeholders' engagement workshops are expected to be held before the end of 2026 to build consensus and ensure nationwide ownership of the reforms.
