The Ondo State House of Assembly complex in Akure was thrown into chaos on Thursday morning, August 27, 2026, following an invasion by suspected thugs amid the ongoing impeachment saga against the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji.
The alleged invaders, who suddenly arrived at the legislative premises, combed the hallways, moving from office to office in what witnesses described as a terrifying display of force. The thugs were reportedly from Ondo town, the Speaker's constituency. Staff members within the Assembly complex said the suspected hoodlums created severe tension among workers and lawmakers.
For several tense minutes, the invaders held sway over the premises, disrupting the day's legislative schedule and instilling palpable fear among workers, many of whom barricaded themselves inside their offices to avoid confrontation.
According to sources, the suspected thugs were allegedly mobilised to forestall the purported removal of the Speaker, who has been facing an impeachment battle in the Assembly. A staff member who spoke on condition of anonymity said it took the coordinated intervention of some lawmakers and security operatives to force the intruders out. Hon. Olajide Oguntodu, other members of the House, and security agencies worked together to ensure the hoodlums were displaced from the premises.
The impeachment move against Oladiji stemmed from allegations of financial impropriety, over the alleged diversion of ₦44 million from the budget of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC). Over 21 of the 26 members of the Assembly had signed an impeachment notice calling for the Speaker's immediate resignation. Lawmakers accused Oladiji of financial misconduct and abuse of office, with the allegations specifically tied to the reordering of the 2026 budget of OSOPADEC.
Security has been beefed up around the Assembly complex, with some of the lawmakers currently in a marathon meeting. As of the time of filing this report, there was no immediate official statement from the Ondo State House of Assembly explaining who brought the suspected thugs. The identity of the men was also not disclosed.
The incident marks a volatile escalation in the tensions that have gripped the Assembly for several weeks. The All Progressives Congress (APC) had earlier intervened in the impeachment of Oladiji. APC leaders and lawmakers involved in the dispute met on Friday to resolve the crisis, appealing to all parties to embrace peace and maintain the status quo while consultations continue.
