A man has reportedly died by suicide after allegedly hanging himself in Koro, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State. The incident occurred early Thursday morning, August 27, 2026, according to information and a video obtained by SaharaReporters. In the footage, the deceased was seen hanging at the scene before his lifeless body was later recovered by close relatives.
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. As of the time of filing this report, the reason the man allegedly took his own life had not been established.
The tragedy comes amid a series of terror attacks in the community and other neighbourhoods in Patigi Local Government Area. Residents of the area have been living in fear, with armed bandits reportedly terrorising the region. Former Kwara State House of Assembly member, Hon. Dauda Lata, recently alleged that bandits had taken over his farm, harvested and sold his crops in local markets, while residents were left at the mercy of armed criminals.
Lata, who represented Lata and neighbouring communities, also claimed that more than 100 vigilantes were killed in his community and buried in a mass grave by residents after repeated appeals to the government for security intervention allegedly went unanswered. "They killed over 100 people from my community even last year. Over hundred vigilantes were killed. We buried them in a mass grave. We, the people, did it ourselves. Not even the local government came to help us or paid condolences," he said.
The former lawmaker stated that worsening insecurity in his community and what he described as the government's failure to respond to repeated appeals contributed to his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC). "I left APC because the Governor refused to visit my community, Lata, since 2020. I even sent a message to the Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, but he refused to respond," Lata said. He further alleged that the community, located along the Kwara-Kogi border, has suffered repeated attacks allegedly carried out by armed bandits operating from a grazing reserve in the area. "Those Fulani people that are living with us, in 2020, they burned our community, killed a lot of people. Till date, the government did nothing about it," he said. Lata also alleged that several residents had been abducted by bandits, with some victims still in captivity after their families were asked to pay huge ransoms. "They are asking for N50 million ransom. Even if you sell all of us in my community, we won't be valued up to N50 million. We told the government about this too, nothing happened," he said.
The tragedy in Koro adds to the growing list of challenges facing communities in Patigi LGA, where residents continue to grapple with both insecurity and the psychological toll of living under constant threat. As the community mourns the loss of one of its own, questions remain about what drove the man to take his life and what more can be done to address the deep-seated issues plaguing the region.
