The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a man for the alleged defilement of his eight-month-old stepdaughter, a case that has sent shockwaves through the community and renewed concerns over the safety of children in the state. The suspect, identified as Balarabe Adamu, a resident of Lame in Toro Local Government Area, was taken into custody on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following a report lodged at the Gumau Division.
According to a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the incident was reported on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at about 5:34 pm. The report alleged that Adamu "sexually abused his 8-month-old stepdaughter, who was brought to his residence by his wife". Following the report, the victim was immediately taken to the General Hospital, Toro, for medical examination and treatment.
Police operatives attached to the Gumau Division swiftly responded to the report and arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody and undergoing investigation. The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged act and assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated. He added that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation, in accordance with the law.
The command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on all forms of sexual violence and child abuse. It urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant and report suspicious acts to the nearest police station for prompt intervention. The command said further updates on the case would be communicated to the public in due course.
The arrest comes amid growing concerns over the rising incidence of child sexual abuse in Nigeria, where perpetrators often include family members and trusted individuals. The case has drawn widespread condemnation, with many calling for the strictest penalties to serve as a deterrent. As the investigation continues, the public awaits the outcome of the legal proceedings, hoping for justice for the innocent victim.
