A two-year-old boy who was kidnapped from the Bunyia Iruan community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State has been rescued, and two teenage suspects have been apprehended. The rescue was carried out by youths from the Ogberia Ochoro community in the Mbube area of Ogoja Local Government Area on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
The suspects, identified as 17-year-olds Suahnen Lorlumun and Sekeghshie Silas, were intercepted by local vigilantes while allegedly attempting to move the child through the Ogberia Ochoro community. The boy had reportedly been abducted from his home in Bunyia Iruan two days earlier.
According to an eyewitness, the suspects were stopped by community members who grew suspicious of their movements. “When we noticed that they were trying to take the boy across our community, we had to stop them,” the witness said.
The suspects were taken to the village square, tied to a concrete wall, and beaten before police arrived. The Cross River State Police Command confirmed that the two suspects were later taken to the Okubuchi Police Outpost by the Clan Head of Bunyia Irruan to prevent them from being lynched by angry youths.
ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the state Police Public Relations Officer, said the command was aware of the incident and confirmed that the suspects were released into the custody of the Clan Head, accompanied by three officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) from Calabar. NAPTIP's involvement points to ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child's abduction.
The boy was rescued and is now safe. Police have not yet announced formal charges.
