The Kogi State Police Command has rescued 11 kidnapped victims and recovered two abandoned vehicles following a coordinated operation along the Aloma-Egane road in Ofu Local Government Area. The command also confirmed a separate attack along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway that left one person dead and another abducted.

According to a statement by the command's Public Relations Officer, ASP Salihu Oyiza Afusat, the first incident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when armed men emerged from the bush around Ogene Zaria, near the Ogene Zaria/Onicha-Igo Junction, and blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions. The assailants abducted some passengers, while others escaped into the surrounding bush.

Upon receiving a distress call, the Divisional Police Officer of Ofu led a joint security team to the scene. Two abandoned vehicles were recovered, and a coordinated bush-combing and rescue operation was immediately launched, resulting in the successful rescue of 11 abducted victims, including the drivers of the two buses. Preliminary debriefing indicated that most of the rescued victims were National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja. The rescued victims were debriefed after necessary procedures and allowed to continue their journey.

In a separate incident, the command received a report of an armed attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway, particularly around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area, on Thursday, August 27, 2026. According to the police, the incident occurred at about 5:00 p.m. when armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists. A blue Toyota Corolla, with registration number GWA 636 CH, was subsequently found abandoned along the highway. The driver was found dead inside the vehicle, while another occupant was taken by the assailants.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has directed sustained operational efforts towards securing the affected corridor and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The command, in collaboration with other security agencies, is working to locate and rescue the abducted victim and track down those responsible.

The police have urged motorists and residents along the route to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to the police or other security agencies. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
