A 33-year-old Point of Sale operator who was abducted from her business premises in Amasoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has been rescued by the police after spending nearly a month in captivity. The Bayelsa State Police Command also arrested the victim's 43-year-old neighbour, Perebodei Denmark, in connection with the kidnap, according to reports from AIT Live and Newspot Nigeria.
Sarah Chinedu Ama was abducted on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from her shop after she was lured by armed men pretending to be customers. According to the victim, the kidnappers entered her shop under the guise of making a purchase, only to produce a weapon and force her away. She was taken through a rainforest in the Ogbonbiri community, where she was held captive for three weeks.
Briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Yenagoa, the State Commissioner of Police, Saka Adewale, said operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit deployed gunboats through the Otuan River after gathering actionable intelligence. The team spent three days searching the riverine and forest areas before locating the victim. The police also arrested Perebodei Denmark, a 43-year-old neighbour of the victim, who is believed to have been involved in the abduction.
Items recovered from the suspect include the victim's POS machine, a mobile phone, two expended assault rifle ammunition, three live cartridges, UBA and OPay ATM cards, as well as items suspected to be ring charms. The police said the suspect is cooperating with investigators to facilitate the arrest of other members of the gang who are still at large.
The victim, Sarah Chinedu, who also spoke about her ordeal, revealed that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N100 million. She begged them to accept N5 million, but they refused and insisted on no less than N20 million. She noted that her husband had already paid N1.8 million before the police operation successfully brought her home.
The rescue operation has brought relief to the victim's family, who had spent weeks in anguish. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities. Investigations are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate.
