A middle-aged man was rescued on Friday, August 28, 2026, after he reportedly jumped into the water from the British American Bridge in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. and attracted the attention of passers-by who quickly raised the alarm and mobilised to pull the man from the water.
An eyewitness, Mr Amos Forte, who was passing through the area at the time, said the man walked towards the bridge before jumping into the water. “Several persons raised the alarm and he was eventually rescued,” Forte told Vanguard. He said people around the bridge quickly mobilised and worked together to pull the man out of the water. According to Forte, the man appeared to have sustained injuries in the incident and was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention. Security operatives later visited the scene.
The circumstances that led to the man’s action were not immediately known as of the time of filing this report. The British American Bridge is a key infrastructure in Jos North LGA, and the incident has raised questions about the state of mental health and the need for better support systems for individuals in distress. The swift action of the bystanders, however, prevented what could have been a tragedy. The Plateau State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
