Ten National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were abducted by suspected kidnappers last week have been rescued from Egume Forest in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The victims were freed in a joint operation involving the police, military, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security and auxiliary forces. The rescue, confirmed by the Kogi State Police Command on Monday, August 31, 2026, followed a coordinated, sustained, and intelligence-driven operation.
The 10 rescued corps members were among 15 who were kidnapped last week while travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja. The abductors had reportedly contacted some of the victims' families, demanding a ransom of N20 million for each corps member. While the rescue of 10 victims has brought relief, the operation is still ongoing, with security forces intensifying efforts to locate and rescue the remaining five victims. "The operation is still ongoing, with the potential to rescue all the kidnapped victims," said ASP Afusat Saliu, the Command's Public Relations Officer.
The Kogi State Police Command stated that the operation is also aimed at dismantling criminal elements operating in the area and bringing those responsible for the abduction to justice. The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, commended the gallantry, professionalism, and resilience of all security personnel involved in the operation. He also appreciated residents of the affected communities for their cooperation and for providing timely and credible information, which he said was critical to the success of the operation.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious movements or information that could assist in locating the remaining victims and apprehending the perpetrators. It assured residents that all available operational resources are being deployed to ensure the safe recovery of the remaining victims. Further updates will be provided as operational circumstances permit.
