Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has directed the immediate suspension of all village and ward heads in Mallam-Fatori, the headquarters of Abadam Local Government Area, citing their absence during his visit to the community. Zulum gave the order on Monday, August 31, 2026, during a working visit to the border community, where he assessed public facilities and engaged residents on their immediate needs.
His spokesperson, Dauda Illiya, said the governor described the absence of the traditional leaders as unacceptable, particularly at a time when displaced residents are returning and beginning the difficult task of rebuilding their lives after years of Boko Haram insurgency. Zulum emphasised that traditional leaders play a critical role in stabilising communities emerging from conflict, and their presence is essential for maintaining communication between the government and residents.
The governor directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele, to work with the Shehu of Borno to commence the process of appointing new village and ward heads without delay. He stressed that new appointees must be persons of proven integrity, competence and commitment, capable of working with the government and security agencies to restore stability and development.
Beyond the disciplinary action, Zulum pledged to accelerate the reconstruction of critical public infrastructure in Mallam-Fatori, a community heavily affected by years of insurgency and displacement. He inspected destroyed schools, government buildings, and housing facilities across the town, and directed the immediate construction of primary and secondary schools, an Islamic education centre, and a hospital.
During the visit, Zulum also met with troops of the 68 Battalion Nigerian Army headquarters, commending them for their courage and commitment to maintaining security in the area. He assured the military of continued government support to enhance their operational effectiveness.
The directive comes amid renewed government efforts to rebuild Mallam-Fatori, a war-ravaged border town that remains one of the communities hardest hit by years of insurgency. Zulum's swift disciplinary action signals his administration's resolve to ensure that traditional institutions actively support the return and resettlement of displaced populations.
