The Peoples Democratic Party and the entire political landscape of Nigeria's South-South region have been thrown into mourning following the death of a prominent chieftain, Chief Daniel Osi Orbih. The respected politician, a close ally of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the age of 64, barely two months before his 65th birthday.
The Orbih family announced his passing in a statement signed by Francis Udukhomoi Orbih, describing the news as received with "profound sadness and a heavy heart" while expressing total submission to the will of God. According to the family, the late Chief Orbih is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence Orbih; his children, Ms. Winifred Anwosiobor Orbih and Dr. Mildred Omonemi Orbih; his brothers and sisters; as well as other members of his extended family. The family appealed to friends, relatives, and well-wishers to remember them in their prayers during this difficult time and announced that further details regarding funeral arrangements would be made public at a later date.
Chief Orbih, who was born on October 27, 1961, at Ogbona in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State, was a towering figure in Nigerian politics. He served as the Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the PDP and later as the National Vice Chairman of the party for the South-South zone. Before his death, he held the position of Chairman of the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, a role to which he was appointed by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo in 2024.
His death has drawn an emotional reaction from his long-time political ally, Minister Nyesom Wike, who described the loss as the "fall of one of the biggest trees in the political forest of Edo State." In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike expressed profound grief. "I have lost a friend and a committed political ally. Dan Osi Orbih was everything anyone could desire in friendship and political associate. But we can't question God, He gives and He takes," Wike said. He extended his condolences to the Orbih family, describing the deceased as a good friend, a great politician, and a man of faith in the Almighty God.
Orbih's death marks another significant loss for the Peoples Democratic Party, where he was regarded as a prominent political figure and maintained close ties with the FCT minister. His passing leaves a void in the political structure of Edo State and the South-South region. As the family begins mourning, the political community has joined them in prayers, reflecting on the legacy of a man who was considered one of the biggest political forces in his home state.
