A wave of terror swept through Daki Takwas community in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State on the night of Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when armed bandits invaded the settlement at about 10:45 p.m., rustling cattle and other livestock, and stealing mobile phones from residents. Local sources told SaharaReporters that the attackers unleashed a barrage of gunfire that echoed through the community until approximately 12:30 a.m., leaving residents cowering in fear. No deaths were reported, but the attack has once again exposed the vulnerability of communities on the outskirts of Daki Takwas, where insecurity remains a major concern.
The assault on Daki Takwas is not an isolated incident. The community, located in the volatile North-West region, has been repeatedly targeted by bandits who have exploited the difficult terrain and weak security presence to launch devastating attacks. Just weeks earlier, on August 23, 2026, suspected bandits launched coordinated assaults on Bardoki in Gummi LGA and Bunkasau in Bukkuyum LGA, killing multiple residents and setting homes ablaze. Following that attack, many displaced residents had sought refuge in Daki Takwas, only to find themselves once again in the line of fire. The recurring cycle of violence has turned the Gummi axis into a theatre of bloodshed and fear, where residents live in constant dread of the next invasion.
The attack on Daki Takwas has reignited calls for stronger security measures and early-warning systems to protect vulnerable communities. Residents have repeatedly appealed to the government for intervention, but the bandits continue to operate with impunity. The Zamfara State Government has previously stated that it will not negotiate with bandits but will accept the surrender of those who genuinely renounce violence and lay down their arms. However, the latest attack suggests that criminal elements remain undeterred and continue to terrorise innocent civilians.
The Nigerian military has recorded some successes in the region, including the recovery of rustled cattle and the neutralisation of bandits in previous operations. However, the persistence of attacks like the one on Daki Takwas highlights the scale of the challenge facing security forces in the North-West. As one community leader lamented, "How many more communities have to be raided before stronger security and early-warning measures are put in place?" The attack serves as a stark reminder that the fight against banditry is far from over, and that the people of Zamfara continue to pay the price for the government's inability to protect them.
