Nigeria's Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has unveiled what he describes as a decisive document in the long-running debate over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's age, revealing that Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) records confirm the President was born on March 29, 1952. Omokri made the disclosure during an interview on the City Boy Movement podcast with Otega Ogra, a Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, directly countering claims by opposition figures that the President is 90 years old.
The ambassador-designate presented a letter from the FBI, transmitted through the US Embassy in Lagos, addressed to the Nigerian government and the then-Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun. The letter was a response to a Nigerian government request dated February 3, 2003, seeking a background check on Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Omokri, the FBI's National Crime Information Centre record check returned "negative results for criminal arrest records, wants or warrants for Bola Tinubu". Crucially, the document also contained Tinubu's date of birth—March 29, 1952. Omokri argued that this single piece of information dismantles any claim that the President is 90 years old.
The disclosure comes amid escalating political tensions ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, had earlier claimed to have evidence that Tinubu is 90 years old and vowed to tender it in court. Omokri, however, dismissed Atiku's assertion, stating: "This document destroys anybody trying to say that the President is 90 years old".
Omokri also drew a sharp distinction between having an FBI record and having a criminal record. He noted that FBI records can be generated through routine background checks, including those associated with US visa applications. He insisted that "there is no criminal record against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu" and that the current controversy stems from a Freedom of Information Act request filed by American activist Aaron Greenspan, not a new criminal case. Omokri further challenged critics to verify the 2003 letter directly with the US Embassy, providing the consular email address for verification.
The ambassador-designate's revelation has intensified the debate over Tinubu's background and eligibility, as the 2027 election campaign season gathers momentum. For now, Omokri has thrown down the gauntlet: the FBI records, he says, have spoken—and they put the President firmly at 74 years old, not 90.
